Interim recruitment

Interim Registered Manager recruitment

Experienced interim leadership to keep your service running while you recruit a permanent appointment.

When the manager leaves, the clock starts

A resignation, a long-term absence or a sudden departure leaves a service without the person accountable for it. The staff still need leading, the paperwork still needs signing, and an inspection does not wait for your recruitment process.

Permanent recruitment for a role this senior takes time if it is done properly. Interim cover buys you that time without leaving the service exposed.

  • Cover from someone who has run a regulated service before
  • Time to recruit permanently without cutting corners
  • Continuity for your staff, residents and families

How we help

Capable cover, not a placeholder

An interim manager should be able to walk into a service and lead it, not just hold the title. We look for people who have done the job before, can read a service quickly, and are comfortable being accountable from day one.

We are equally clear about what interim is not: it is not a cheaper way to fill a permanent post, and it works best when you have a plan for what follows.

  • Available candidates

Interim managers are between assignments by design, so the conversation starts with availability rather than notice periods.

  • Used to arriving mid-situation

Candidates who are comfortable taking on a service under pressure, including one with actions outstanding.

  • Alongside a permanent search

Many providers run interim cover and a permanent search together. We can handle both.

  • A clear handover

Interim work should end tidily. We factor the handover to your permanent appointment into the brief.

Candidate profile

The interim managers we put forward

What we look for in someone taking on your service at short notice.

  • Has held a Registered Manager post in a comparable setting
  • Can describe how they stabilised a service, not just that they did
  • Available on the timescale you actually need
  • Comfortable being accountable for a service they did not build
  • Straightforward about what they can and cannot take on

The process

How recruitment works

Three steps, and you will know where things stand at each of them.

  1. Step 1: Tell Us What You Need

Provide details about the role, service and urgency.

  2. Step 2: We Identify Suitable Candidates

Candidates are reviewed against the requirements and relevant compliance criteria.

  3. Step 3: Interview & Placement

You meet suitable candidates and proceed with the preferred appointment.

Compliance

Short notice does not mean short cuts

The pressure of an urgent vacancy is exactly when verification matters most. We agree the checks the role needs with you up front and tell you plainly where each candidate stands, including anything still outstanding.

  • Identity verification

Confirming a candidate is who they say they are, using original documentation.

  • Right to work in the UK

Checking a candidate’s right to work in line with Home Office requirements.

  • DBS checks

Enhanced DBS disclosure appropriate to the role, including Update Service status where a candidate is registered.

  • Employment references

References covering recent employment, requested directly from the employer rather than the candidate.

  • Professional qualification checks

Verification of the qualifications a role requires, including management and care qualifications.

  • NMC verification

    Where applicable

Register checks with the Nursing and Midwifery Council for roles requiring a nursing registration.

  • HCPC verification

    Where applicable

Register checks with the Health and Care Professions Council for registered health professionals.

  • Setting-specific requirements

    Role dependent

Any further checks the setting or its CQC-regulated activity requires, agreed with you before we begin.

Frequently asked questions

If your question is not here, ask us — we would rather answer it properly than have you guess.

How quickly can an interim manager start?

Interim candidates are usually available sooner than permanent ones, but it still depends on the role, the location and the terms. We will give you a realistic view for your specific vacancy rather than a headline figure.

How long can an interim appointment last?

It varies with the reason for the cover. Some assignments run for a few weeks during an absence; others run for several months while a permanent search completes. We will talk through what makes sense for your service.

Can an interim manager become permanent?

Sometimes, and it can be a good outcome for both sides. It should be a deliberate conversation rather than something that happens by default, so we would rather discuss it openly with you and the candidate.

Do you cover domiciliary care and supported living as well as care homes?

Yes. Interim requirements come up across residential and nursing homes, domiciliary care, supported living and specialist services.

What checks are carried out for an interim appointment?

The same approach as a permanent one: screening can include identity, right to work, an enhanced DBS check, references and any professional register checks the role requires. We agree what applies before we start and are explicit about what is complete.

What if the interim appointment does not work out?

Tell us early. We would rather have an awkward conversation in week one than discover in month three that it was not working, and we will deal with it rather than leave you to manage around it.
